He joined a party of Longhunters on an expedition far into the unexplored wilds of Southwestern Virginia in 1767, In the next two years he moved his family, plus his brother John joined him to the sparsely settled Northern Washington Co., Va., where he received a "Proof of Settlement Grant" in 1772. William fought at the battle of King's Mountain, S. C. under the command of his neighbor Rees Bowen who was killed at that battle. William was one of the original petitioners to form Tazewell Co., Va. Jane died in Tazewell Co., Va in 1795. William remarried "Fannie" Higginbotham in 1801, about 1808 started selling his land holdings and moved to Mississippi Territory, later Madison Co., Alabama. William , Sr. died 10 Sep 1824 in Madison Co., Alabama. |
