I am looking for the father of Thomas Garrison who was born about 1814 and was from NJ. The following is
an excerpt from "Past and Present of Winnebago County." (Ill.)
"On the 20th of January, 1863, Mr. Miller was united in marriage to Miss
Adda Garrison, a native of New Jersey, who born March 7, 1844, and is a
daughter of Thomas and Electa (Walker) Garrison. Her father was a
speculator and also engaged in the grocery business. He came to the
West in September, 1853, bringing with him a capital of seventy-five
thousand dollars, and, locating in Rockford, he bought property on Main
street where the Talcott property now stands. At one time he owned all
of the northern portion of the city and was a very prominent and
influential man here. In 1860 he went west to the Rocky mountains, and
during the last ten years of his life he frequently visited that section
of the country, his death occurring Colorado in 1871, when he was 57
years of age. His wife passed away in December, 1868. They were the
parents of five daughters and one son: Mrs. Harriet N. Cedarholm, a
widow , residing in Englewood, Illinois; Mrs. Elizabeth Garrison. who is
living in Woodstock, Illinois; Mrs. Theodocia Cleveland, a resident of
Evanston, Illinois; Mrs. Miller; Mrs. Anna Know of Michigan, and Thomas
J. who is also living in that state."

I believe my G-grandmother, Amanda Garrison Martin was born at Jonesville, Lee County, Virginia, April 11, 1848. When the war started, recruiters from both sides came through and took her brothers one by one. She could not find them after the war. Her
ather, John? Garrison, b. 1807, Tidewater, Virginia also disappeared during the war. Her mother, Amanda Huff, b. Jonesville, Lee County, Virginia, died some time before the war, maybe 1-5 years. About April 11, 1861 (Amanda's 13th birthday) her father c
me home with a new bride, Matilda Hippicott.
All of the above information is suspect because my mother was writing a book about her grandmother Amanda Garrison Martin, and it is difficult separate fact from fiction in her notes.
